Song for Mothers

Anne Janelle’s latest release dedicated to the mothers of the world. Available digitally worldwide May 8, 2022.

Never have enough time,
never doing enough …

Nothing is as authentic, or as vulnerable, as when a writer writes from her own experience. This is what Nova Scotian cellist-come-songwriter Anne Janelle has done with her latest single, “Song for Mothers.” This song both tells of Anne's first-hand experience as a mother and serves as a dedication to other mothers. Anne says: “I became a mother 6 years ago and it was one of the best decisions of my life. I have never learned so much, been so fulfilled, and been so frustrated. It’s intense and exhausting and relentless. And yet, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I wrote this song as a direct message to other mothers. Something that says “I see you in all your glory and heartache.” ”

No dancing around it, no sugar-coating it. In this song, Anne grapples with one of a mother's biggest challenges: the unknown. In the chorus she sings, “And you want nothing more than to know they'll be fine, but you don't know that, do you? You're a mother.”

And, like the stem of a flower to its bloom, the instruments on this recording support the lyrics and present them in their best light. Anne's natural voice is as clear as her message and her simple piano accompaniment provides an anchor without taking any attention away from her words. The string orchestra is lush, like a dream that fades in and out, akin to the passage of time when solving a jigsaw puzzle or sitting by a bonfire. A soothing combination of sounds that acts as what Anne calls “a musical hug.”

For mothers, “Song for Mothers” offers five minutes to sit down, relax and enjoy some peace and quiet. For everyone else, it offers a chance to see inside the heart of a mother and to honour the love that is nurturing the next generation.

Set for release this Mother's Day (May 8, 2022). Available worldwide as a digital single. Contact anne@annejanelle.com for interview or for further information.

Song for Mothers

You’ve never been this kind of tired in your life
Your heart is still reeling from when it was burst open wide
You're a mother
Don't know where you've gone or if you're coming back
Abandoned the signs that say "don't worry, you're still on track."
You're a mother

Chorus
And it keeps getting harder the older they get
More questions, unanswered
And you want nothing more than to know they’ll be fine
But you don’t know that, do ya?
You're a mother

No place of your own, no time to yourself
You're never on top of things, how can you give anymore?
You're a mother
Never have enough time, never doing enough
Always have to be ready and have to be so darned tough
You're a mother

Chorus

You're torn every time you're away from your babes
So much that you love but it seems like there's not enough space
You're a mother
Nobody told you, you'd never have guessed
One moment you're cursed and the next you are so very blessed
You're a mother

Bridge
But the joy you feel
When the smiles are real
Makes the sorrow seem amazing
They will learn to sing
They will spread their wings
But please don't let anybody hurt them
I'm their mother

Should you give them more stuff, should you toughen them up?
Whatever you do, you know that there's only one shot
You're a mother
And, just when you think you can manage the pain,
They're out on their own and all of this starts once again ...
